LED bulb lumens: how much for what use?
LED bulb lumens: how much for what use?
A few years ago, the LED bulb was an absolute novelty, while today it is widespread and is practically the only alternative from the point of view of energy savings. However, despite the development of lighting LED, some aspects related to the choice of these luminaires are not very clear. Including the number of lumens of the LED bulb for which to opt. In many homes, individual rooms are not properly lit. Experience has shown that many pieces are often too dark. The luminous efficiency of the lumens of the LED bulb solves this problem. Of course, the very high powers of the old incandescent lamps have helped a lot to use the light sparingly. But in recent years, things have changed. Today, LED bulbs consume about 85% less energy. Thanks to the lumens of the LED bulb, you can multiply the intensity of the light while saving a lot of energy. The number of lumens of the LED bulb provides information on how much light a lamp actually emits on all sides. This is important to know how bright the room is. The higher the number of lumens in the LED bulb, the more the lamp lights up intensely. The number of lumens of a bulb varies from one bulb to another. For example, LED bulbs shine more brightly than other bulbs with fewer lumens at a given angle because they concentrate lighter. In addition, they consume less energy and help you save electricity.
Lumens of a LED bulb: luminous flux
The luminous flux indicates the amount of light emitted by a light source. This means all the visible light emitted by the LED bulb in all directions. The lumen of the LED bulb designate the physical unit of the luminous flux. It is abbreviated in lm. The amount of brightness provided is therefore quantified by the number of lumens of the LED bulb. In other words, it is the radiation emitted by the light sources in the form of visible light. The lumens of the LED bulb is the decisive value for choosing the brightness of a light source and thus also for the lighting design of the living spaces.
With the old bulbs, you could compare their brightness with the wattage. It's not so easy with LED technology. This is due to the different components of the LED bulbs. Each component influences the effectiveness of the lamp. Therefore, two LED bulbs of the same power can be different.
It is therefore important to study the number of lumens of the LED bulb in relation to its radiation angle. A light source of 600 lumens and a beam angle of 15 ° is significantly brighter in some places than a second 600 lumens LED bulb but with a beam angle of 90 °.
The quality of LED bulbs
Not all LED Tube lights are of the same quality, which is important for purchase. Here are the main things to consider when buying a bulb:
-The energy class: as for air conditioners, the higher it is, the less the bulb consumes for the same number of lumens of the LED bulb. If the LED bulb belongs to a bad energy class you pay less but consume more.
-The ratio lumens number of the LED bulb / Watts of light output: the table above is very speaking. Evaluating the lighting power of a light bulb only through Watts is a mistake.
-Resistance to cold: High quality LED bulbs to withstand very low temperatures.
-The start-up time: the low-quality bulbs tend to take a few minutes to reach the maximum luminous flux, the high-quality bulbs offer optimum immediate lighting.
-Duration: quality LED bulbs to have a longer theoretical life.
How do I know how many watts and lumens of LED light do I need for each of my parts?
It all depends on the type of room and the activities you want to do there. In the kitchen, for example, you need a lot more light than in a living room or a dining room. It will, therefore, require a higher number of lumens of the LED bulb and a better light output. Likewise in a workshop or office, you need a lot of light. It also depends on your preferences. You may prefer light or slightly darker pieces. Today, you can better light the rooms and even save electricity thanks to the lumens of the LED bulb. We recall that for the calculation of the lighting efficiency, you must take into account not only the watts but also the number of lumens of the LED bulb . A good-quality LED light bulb is now capable of achieving a light output of at least 60 lumens per watt which can, in some cases, exceed 90-100 lumens per watt.
Calculation of desired LED bulb lumens
The luminous power, or the luminous flux, is only the total of the lumens of the LED bulb. To calculate the desired lighting on a given surface, expressed in lux per square meter, you must divide the luminous flux (total lumens of one or more luminaires) by the number of m2 of the room to be illuminated. For correct installation, it is necessary to know the light cone of each LED bulb. The cone of light allows us to know the lux that the light source is able to create according to the installation distance. We recommend 2,000 to 4,000 lumens of LED bulbs for a living area of approximately 20 m². For basic lighting in the living room or hall, you can orientate yourself to a value of 100 to 150 lm / m². For the kitchen or the bathroom, on a value of 200 to 300 lm / m². The room is then sufficiently lighted according to the general habits.
